Samsung could give the Galaxy S27 Ultra a major camera processing upgrade

Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra cameras have evolved in small steps lately, but its video stack has moved more noticeably. The Galaxy S24 Ultra already offered 4K/120fps and 8K/30fps recording, the S25 Ultra added Samsung Log, and the S26 Ultra introduced Samsung’s APV codec. A new Galaxy S27 Ultra leak now suggests Samsung could build on those tools without raising the headline recording resolution.

A relatively unknown X user, WalleGalaxy, claims the Galaxy S27 Ultra will support updated versions of Samsung Log and APV (Advanced Professional Video), potentially delivering greater dynamic range than the S26 Ultra. Recording reportedly remains capped at 4K/120fps and 8K/30fps.

The bigger change could be color processing. The same source says Samsung has overhauled its image pipeline, particularly for photos, to produce warmer, more natural-looking colors than the comparatively cooler S26 Ultra. It’s unclear whether the change will extend to video, but given that the account isn’t an established source, we’d treat these claims with caution.

Still, that would fit into a broader camera overhaul already rumored for the S27 Ultra. Previous leaks point to a new 200MP main sensor that could use LOFIC for improved dynamic range, alongside ultrawide and selfie camera upgrades. Samsung also reportedly tested a 200MP variable-aperture camera, although the feature has supposedly been dropped. Meanwhile, the 3x telephoto could disappear while the existing 50MP 5x camera sticks around.

Samsung will need those improvements as rivals raise the bar going into 2027. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max camera has a 48MP main sensor with a physical variable aperture and expanded manual controls. vivo’s X500 Pro Max reportedly pairs a 200MP telephoto camera with a 400mm ZEISS extender and supports 4K/240fps video.

OPPO has confirmed three 200MP rear cameras for the Find X10 Pro Max, and HONOR’s Magic 9 Pro Max combines dual 200MP cameras with optional 200mm and 500mm teleconverters. Xiaomi’s 18 Pro Max is also expected to bring Leica-branded cameras and a rear display that can double as a viewfinder.

If this leak is accurate, Samsung may be taking a broader approach with the S27 Ultra: revised camera hardware where it matters, backed by better color processing, dynamic range, and professional video tools.
