Limited edition Galaxy S9 hints at Samsung's custom case plans
- Samsung and Vodafone have teamed up to release a limited edition Red Bull Ring Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.
- The phone comes with a smart cover that communicates with the device using an inbuilt NFC chip.
- This could hint at Samsung’s plans for custom cases in the future.
Samsung and Vodafone have joined forces to release a limited edition Red Bull Ring version of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in Holland (spotted by SamMobile). The phone comes with a Red Bull Ring cover and plenty of unique Formula One-themed content. This includes rotating wallpapers, ringtones, and Always-on display images. People who buy the phone will also be able to watch highlights and race content through Netherlands sports channel Ziggo Sport.
What is perhaps most interesting about this news is that the cover communicates with the phone using an NFC chip. The press release says that once the cover is connected to the phone, it will load a unique Red Bull Ring theme that will change the wallpaper, colors, and icons.
Recently, we reported that Samsung appeared to be preparing to sell custom cases based on themes or wallpapers in its Theme Store. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if Samsung’s custom cases shared the same basic functionality.
Other than the case and the Red Bull Ring themed extras, the phone will arrive as a standard Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus. However, people who pick up one of the devices will also receive two-weekend tickets for the Austria Grand Prix. If you are lucky enough to live in Holland and want to snap one up, the promotional period is from April 16 to May 27 and you can grab one here.
