Is Samsung doing away with the Gear brand name?

A new trademark filing from Samsung suggests the possibility that the company could release wearables without the word "Gear."

TL;DR
  • A new Samsung trademark filing suggests the company could release wearables without the word “Gear” in the title.
  • The trademarks are for a Samsung Galaxy Watch and Samsung Galaxy Fit.
  • It could be that Samsung is just “filing to file” to preserve the names.

When you buy a Samsung wearable like wireless earbuds, a smartwatch, or a fitness band, it almost always has the word “Gear” somewhere in its title. However, a new trademark filing, via Android Police, suggests that that may be changing soon.

In some new filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Samsung refers to two products called a Samsung Galaxy Watch and a Samsung Galaxy Fit. This would be the first set Galaxy-branded wearables to not fall under the Gear moniker.

However, it could be that Samsung is going to keep the Gear name for specific devices and give the Galaxy name to its higher-end devices. Or, it could just be that Samsung is filing the trademarks now in order to place a hold on the name, without actually having a product in the pipeline.

If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be the first time that a company filed a trademark for something that they never intend to put to use.

Still, the idea of Samsung releasing a Galaxy smartwatch without the word Gear in the title could point to the company planning the debut of some kind of new wearable. We’ll just have to wait and see.

What do you think? Is this something that could potentially be exciting or do you think Samsung is just filing to file? Let us know in the comments!
