See season 2: Everything we know about the Apple TV Plus series
Another one of Apple TV Plus’s flagship series is back. See season 2, the next instalment of the Jason Momoa-starring sci-fi epic about a world gone blind hits the streamer later this month.
Despite mixed-to-negative reviews for season 1, See is an odd but compelling show that’s hard to turn away from. And it must have found its audience for Apple to reinvest and bring us a second season.
Following a major cliffhanger finale, COVID-19 delays, new casting announcements, and cryptic trailers, See is one of the most exciting returning series for Apple.

What is See?
See takes place in a distant future. Generations ago, a mysterious virus left the world’s population blind. Now, humanity survives in small clans, in some cases reduced to warring factions and others thriving without eyesight.
The premise sounded, frankly, like a bad idea when Apple announced it in 2018. But great performances and gorgeous cinematography helped make it a series to seek out.

It was also importantly quite sensitive to issues of disability despite themes that could have been just exploitative and ableist in their reflection of real-world blindness.
Instead, See presented eyesight as a neutral human trait rather than a gift or a curse. What is eyesight really worth when no one around you has it? Or, more importantly, when society isn’t built around the assumption of eyesight as the default? When blindness is fully supported within communities?
In other words, See was willing to acknowledge that disability has no inherent quality but is defined by social structures that favor some and punish others. Its message was delivered in messy, sometimes clumsy ways, but it felt, in its own way, progressive in its politics.
What happened in See season 1?
When sighted children are born in the Alkenny tribe, their mother Maghra and adoptive father Baba Voss go on the run to protect them from the queen of a nearby dynasty intent to kill anyone who carries the curse of sight.
As the family struggles to survive, we learn that Baba and Maghra both live with secrets about their pasts. Following instructions left by their sighted biological father, the children consider whether they should go to him and learn to live apart from their family and tribe.
But as allegiances break down, daughter Haniwa is taken by shadowy men who work for someone from Baba Voss’s past. Someone Baba hoped never to see again.
When and where can I watch See season 2?
See season 2 will premiere August 27, 2021, almost two years after the premiere of season 1.
See was one of the flagship series to launch at the same time as Apple TV Plus itself in November 2019.

The series is available exclusively on the Apple streamer. It will roll out weekly on Fridays following the premiere.
Apple greenlit a third season, which is currently filming. Season 3 does not have a release date yet.
Was See season 2 affected by COVID-19?
As with many series and films, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted production and delayed the release of See season 2.
Filming for season 2 was initially planned to start in early 2020 in Toronto. Production shut down in March due to safety concerns and a citywide lockdown.
Production resumed the following September, months behind schedule.
See season 3 is currently filming in Toronto.
Other Apple TV Plus series affected by the production shutdown include Servant, For All Mankind, Lisey’s Story, and Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet.
Who’s involved?
Most of the cast and crew from season 1 is returning for See season 2.
In front of the camera, Jason Momoa plays Baba Voss. Other members of the main cast include:
- Alfre Woodard as Paris, an elder of the Alkenny tribe
- Sylvia Hoeks as Queen Kane
- Hera Hilmar as Maghra Kane, wife of Baba Voss and (as we learn in season one) sister of Queen Kane
- Archie Madekwe and Nesta Cooper as the sighted children of Baba Voss and Maghra Kane
- Yadira Guevara-Prip as Bow Lion, a warrior-spy from the Alkenny tribe known as a “shadow,” who can move undetected among other blind people
New to the cast is Dave Bautista, who will play Edo Voss, Baba’s older brother. Baba’s dark, violent past seems to intersect with that of his brother, a feared general who has abducted Baba’s daughter Haniwa.
Watchmen’s Tom Misen also joins in an unknown role.
See was created and written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders), with Francis Lawrence (Constantine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) directing.
Executive producers are Steven Knight, Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Dan Shotz, and Kristen Campo. Joe Strechay serves as associate producer and blindness consultant.
Are any of the actors actually blind?
The question of blind actors came up when season 1 of the series came out. While the main cast all worked with a blindness consultant, Joe Strechay, who spent weeks teaching them to move and interact with the world around them without relying on their sight, there were relatively few blind actors onscreen.

“Every episode has some blind actors or some low-vision actors,” series director and executive producer Francis Lawrence told The Wrap in 2019. “We definitely made an effort to be as inclusive as possible. And I will say that this season is a start, I still think we can do better. And I think we’re going to try and do much better, if we get that second season, to include more blind people — specifically with the more visible characters and principals and series regulars.”
Apple hasn’t released any statements on how new roles and positions on the crew were handled for season 2. Hopefully Lawrence’s wish to do better will be felt throughout See season 2.
What can we expect from See season 2?
With the main plot point of See season 2 likely concerning the attempt to rescue of Haniwa, the addition of Dave Bautista as Edo Voss will be a big deal.
There’s no doubt we’ll learn more about Baba Voss’s backstory in season 2. In the first season, we learned that Baba had a dark past with slavers, though we got little in the way of details. “I swore I would never return here,” Baba Voss says in the trailer for season 2, as he prepares to face his brother. He clearly carries guilt. “I know this enemy. I was this enemy,” he says.
Edo Voss is clearly a scary bad guy and a fighter of comparable skill to Baba. He controls “the greatest military force in the world,” we learn. And different factions are fighting for a new world order. Baba’s struggle to get his daughter back will be set against a fight over the fate of the world, it seems.
And judging from the trailer, we’ll get plenty more fight scenes inspired by the iconic Japanese film and television character Zatoichi, a wandering swordsman who’s nearly unbeatable. Baba Voss’s fight scenes in season 1 were absolutely stunning.
Apple has kept pretty quiet about See season 2. The trailer and casting announcements are the bulk of what we have to work with, so these are the main plot points we can infer for now.
