Shows like Andor
The Expanse
One of Andor’s strong points is its handling of politics. It’s one of the strongest entries in the Star Wars franchise because of its thoughtful take on fascism and rebellion. Amazon’s The Expanse is a similarly political show set in space. In the future, when Earth is in conflict with Mars and the Asteroid Belt, the crew of a small starship navigates complicated allegiances, trying to prevent all-out war and bring balance between warring factions.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Another Star Wars series that fills in gaps in a familiar character’s backstory, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a great Star Wars title and one of the best shows like Andor that you can stream now. Catching up with the aging Jedi between the events of Revenge of the Sith and 1977’s Star Wars, the series sees Kenobi pulled away from Tatooine and the young Luke Skywalker to help rescue Princess Leia. But the plot to kidnap is designed precisely to get Obi-Wan out of hiding, and he suddenly finds himself face-to-face with old and new foes.
Star Wars Rebels
Of all the animated Star Wars titles, Star Wars Rebels is probably the most like Andor, focusing on heroes during a hopeless period as they join up to fight the Empire before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy. The crew of a small starship takes a stand, fighting alongside a huge roster of characters from across the Star Wars Expanded Universe, in this terrific Star Wars show.
Foundation
Based on the genre-defining stories of Isaac Asimov, Foundation is one of Apple TV Plus’s flagship shows. The gorgeous sci-fi epic follows several storylines in an intergalactic empire on the eve of collapse. One of the empire’s leaders struggles desperately with his eventual fate while a group of free-thinkers attempts to limit the damage of civilization’s collapse by following the prophecies of a brilliant mathemetician.
Firefly
Firefly owes a lot to Star Wars. Its hero, Captain Mal Reynolds, is a swashbuckling space brigand in the tradition of Han Solo. He and his crew take odd jobs — some legal, others not so much — while flying under the central government the Alliance’s radar. When they take on passengers on the run from the Alliance, suddenly the crew has to take a stand against a corrupt government once and for all.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
One of the best Netflix shows, the reboot of 80s children’s mainstay She-Ra: Princess of Power follows a resistance movement on a planet ruled by an evil empire (sound familiar?). Adora is an orphan raised by the Horde and sold their propaganda throughout her whole life. Now living amongst rebel fighters, Adora sees the truth. And with a magical sword, she channels the powerful warrior She-Ra, who may be able to tip the balance of power.
Battlestar Galactica
One of the defining sci-fi shows of the 21st century, Battlestar Galactica offers one of the sharpest looks at fascism and intergalactic war. In a distant solar system, humanity is mostly wiped out when a race of robots attacks its inhabited planets and moons. Now, a group of surVivors works to outsmart their foes and reestablish a human colony against impossible odds.
Star Trek: Picard
Another late entry in a storied sci-fi franchise, Star Trek: Picard is a show like Andor more than the other current Trek series. It revisits a known character, albeit in his later years, as he is reinvigorated to fight for good within and against a system that has grown corrupt and broken. Still grieving the loss of his friend Data and the destruction of Romulus, retired captain Jean-Luc Picard returns to Starfleet when he’s visited by ghosts from his past.
Those are some shows like Andor that you can stream right now if you’re a fan of the Rogue One prequel series on Disney Plus.
