Shows like House of the Dragon
Game of Thrones
This one’s a bit of an obvious choice. Most people watching House of the Dragon have likely watched Game of Thrones. The series, based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, takes place about 200 years after the events unfolding in House of the Dragon. That means we see latter-day Westeros, where the struggle for power continues long after the civil war amongst the Targaryens. There are plenty of direct narrative links, but it’s also safe to say these two shows are stylistically and thematically alike too.
The Witcher
Bearing some clear influences from Game of Thrones, Netflix’s original series The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter who travels across a mystical land selling his talents to those in need while reluctantly getting involved in human matters as well.
The Last Kingdom
In The Last Kingdom, a Saxon man raised by Vikings has to choose between the Danes who raised him and his ancestral homeland, England. Seeking to reclaim his birthright, he takes part in a war between Christians and Danes during the found of England as a nation.

Rome
Set in the 1st century BCE during Ancient Rome’s transition from Republic to Empire, HBO’s Rome explores the powerplays and politics of Rome from the perspectives of the rich and powerful as well as of two common soldiers caught in the fray.
The Tudors
This Showtime historical drama follows the life of the young King Henry VIII, who grapples with the political intricacies of the English court and of the world of romance. This show like House of the Dragon is a lavish, prestige drama that charts some of the real-world historical politics that inspire the world of Game of Thrones.
The Wheel of Time
Amazon’s own fantasy epic, based on the books of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time follows a powerful woman who seeks out seemingly regular folk. She hopes to discover which of them is the prophesied “Dragon Reborn,” a powerful being who will either save the world or destroy it. So far, there are no literal dragons, though there’s something thematically fitting here for anyone looking for shows like House of the Dragon.
Foundation
Taking place over several generations, Foundation is very heavily invested in power and legacy. Loosely based on the Foundation series of novels and other stories by Isaac Asimov, the series follows a group of exiles working to prevent the end of civilization by predicting the future through advanced mathematics. It’s one of the best shows on Apple TV Plus, and a terrific show like House of the Dragon.
The Crown
There isn’t a ton of fighting over who gets to be king in Netflix’s The Crown — the British monarchy is pretty well settled on that front — but there are plenty of family squabbles about how things are run and who gets dominion over what. It’s a show like House of the Dragon for fans who enjoy the intricacies of how a kingdom is run. Some people are bored to death by the scenes of the Small Council, but political machinations are among Game of Thrones’ most richly drawn elements.
Succession
As the title suggests, HBO’s Succession is about succession of power. The series, which may not be the most obvious example of a show like House of the Dragon, nevertheless features family infighting to gain control of an empire. In this case it’s a media empire. Following a decline in health, media tycoon Logan Roy has to decide if he should step down, and if so, who should be his successor. His three youngest kids (and a host of others) think the CEO title is theirs for the taking, but the elder Roy isn’t quite done pulling the strings yet.
