Shows like Moon Knight
Blindspot
Moon Knight’s first episode features Steven trying to make sense of events he doesn’t remember. Not knowing that he contains distinct personalities, he has to piece together what’s happening to him from other clues. This narrative structure is reminiscent of NBC’s Blindspot, in which a woman wakes up naked in Times Square with no memory of who she is, covered in tattoos. One tattoo puts her in touch with an FBI agent, while the others point to various crimes to be solved.
WandaVision
Every MCU show on Disney Plus is arguably a show like Moon Knight, but WandaVision stands out from the others. The inaugural Disney Plus MCU show sees Wanda and Vision living in an idyllic suburb modelled on various American sitcoms following the events of Avengers: Endgame. The surreal life the couple leads begins to tear at the seams as we realize Wanda has used her magic to escape the traumatic realities of losing Vision. Like Steven/Marc, Wanda has compartmentalized her consciousness to better cope with reality.
Legion
Legion is probably the strongest contender among shows like Moon Knight. Taking place in Marvel’s X-Men universe, the series follows David Haller, a man who has lived his life in and out of psychiatric institutions, trying to quiet the voices in his head. As the show progresses, David escapes and begins to better understand his mutant powers. Perhaps the voices he hears and the visions he sees have been real all along. Perhaps they are the key to unlocking his immense power.
Dollhouse
One key feature of Moon Knight concerns Steven making his multiple personalities work together. With distinct skillsets, Steven and Marc can accomplish more if they find a way to share their body and work as a team. In Dollhouse, a young woman whose brain is routinely wiped and implanted with new memories and abilities begins to remember her past selves and draw on their unique attributes. The series follows an organization where people can be rented out to the rich and powerful, making their wildest dreams come true. With her newfound self-awareness, Echo may be able to get to the bottom of who is controlling her and her fellow “dolls” by making the most of her many selves.
United States of Tara
United States of Tara is one of the best-known pieces of fiction depicting dissociative identity disorder, making it very much a show like Moon Knight — or at least putting it in conversation with the Marvel series. Suburban housewife and mom Tara Gregson seems to be living the American Dream, but she and her family struggle with the reality that she shifts between several distinct personalities. No one is ever sure who Tara might be from one moment to the next.
Doom Patrol
Like Moon Knight, Doom Patrol features unconventional superheroes in a dark and gritty universe, part of the DC comics TV franchise. The super team is made up of characters with superpowers acquired through major accidents and trauma. Among them is Jane, or rather a character whose dominant personality is Jane. Jane and her many alternate identities each have their own sets of superpowers, making her a force to be reckoned with — but also a little unpredictable.
Severance
Another show that deals with compartmentalized memories, Apple TV Plus’ Severance is among the major standouts of 2022. A group of colleagues works for a mysterious organization. They have all undergone a procedure to separate their personal and work memories, achieving an extreme form of work-life balance through amnesia. When one of the employees is visited by a former colleague outside of work, he begins to dig into what’s actually happening behind closed doors and whether his severance was a good idea.
Mr. Robot
Hacker thriller Mr. Robot is a great choice among shows like Moon Knight. The two may at first seems very different, but they share a sense of paranoia and feature storylines concerned with dissociative identity disorder. Elliot is an antisocial cybersecurity engineer who moonlights as a hacker. When he’s recruited to join a hacktivist group, he begins working to take down corporate America, including his own employer.
Cloak & Dagger
Another Marvel series, Cloak & Dagger sees two runaway teens forming a tight bond following a disaster. The two have unique superpowers and realize that they can unlock new and expanded abilities when they work together to fight off the various threats that plague them on the run.
Those are our top picks of shows like Moon Knight to watch if you’re a fan of the Disney Plus Marvel series.
