Shows like The Umbrella Academy
Doom Patrol
Maybe the most obvious show like The Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol sees a group of outsiders with superpowers developed during traumatic events brought together to investigate bizarre phenomena. When their leader and mentor goes missing, they come together again to find out what happened to him.
Deadly Class
Based on the comics by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, and starring To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before actress Lana Condor, Deadly class follows the kids at an elite private school that serves as a training ground for the children of the world’s top crime families in the 1980s.
Misfits
Starring The Umbrella Academy’s Robert Sheehan, Misfits is a British drama about a group of youth offenders assigned community service together. Their interpersonal conflicts take on new dimensions when an electrical storm leaves the group with mysterious superpowers. Now, they have to work together to understand their new gifts.
Succession
Okay, this one’s obviously an outlier among shows like The Umbrella Academy, but hear us out. Succession is about a rich and powerful media mogul and patriarch who manipulates his grown children, pitting them against each other and having them do his bidding in the faint hope that he might pass along power over his company to one of them. Like the Hargreeves, the Roy children have a complex relationship with their father and with each other, leading to constant drama and conflict.
Watchmen
New laws allow cops to wear masks and hide their identities after an attack by white supremacists leaves most of the Tulsa police force dead. One of those newly empowered cops is Angela Abar, or Sister Night, who fights racists while dealing with the legacy of vigilantism decades after the events of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s celebrated comic Watchmen.
Sense8
One of the best Netflix original series, Sense8 is also a great choice among shows like The Umbrella Academy. Eight complete strangers are brought together when they find themselves mysteriously linked by a psychic bond. Sharing a consciousness from across the globe, the sensates work together to fight an evil organization that seeks to take them out.

Orphan Black
Filmed in Toronto like The Umbrella Academy, Orphan Black also concerns conspiracies and found family. Sarah is an orphan with a difficult past. When she witnesses a woman who looks just like her completing suicide, Sarah assumes her identity in the hopes of starting a better life. Things don’t quite go to plan when she finds out the woman was her clone, and just one of many. Now, Sarah is on a quest to find out who did this and why.
Jupiter’s Legacy
Another Netflix superhero show, Jupiter’s Legacy also tackles family and generational conflict among superpowered protagonists. The first generation of Earth’s heroes, forged during the Great Depression, are aging out of the business. Now, their kids and other superpowered youngsters are taking over, but they don’t all agree that the old rules still apply.
Legion
If wacky, dark, funny superhero antics are your speed, Legion is a pretty wonderful choice. David Haller has been receiving treatment for his schizophrenia since childhood. After a strange encounter with another psychiatric patient, he begins to realize he may not actually be imagining things. Soon, he finds himself teaming up with a team of mutants, like him, and evading capture from a shadowy government organization.
