Sony's first dual camera phone will offer DSLR-like ISO levels

Sony brought some changes to its smartphone line at MWC 2018, adopting a more modern design for the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. They’ll finally sport fingerprint sensors in the U.S. and have several all-new features too. You can read more about all of it in our top features article here.

Unlike most other current flagships however, neither smartphone features a dual camera. During a briefing on its new smartphones, Sony gave us some information on a future device and a new technology it’s working on, called the Fusion Image Signal processor. It’s a mouthful but its impact on smartphones could prove somewhat groundbreaking.

As part of a dual-camera setup coming to a future smartphone — more than likely before the end of this year — the new Fusion Image Signal processor will allow image capture in extremely dark conditions. To achieve this, the camera will be capable of an as-yet unprecedented ISO 51200 for photos and ISO 12800 for video.

It’s not clear what else the new smartphone will offer, but Sony’s been listening to customer feedback and making gradual changes to its product lineup, so chances are the camera won’t be the only change to the current lineup we see.
