Sony confirms schedule of Xperia 1 III software upgrades, and rumors were wrong
- Rumors spread this past week that the Sony Xperia 1 III could only receive one software upgrade.
- This would have been bad news, considering the phone starts at $1,300.
- However, Sony refutes this rumor and says it “aims to” bring more than one Android upgrade to its latest flagship.
Over the past few days, rumors have popped up at several tech publications that Sony could have an anemic plan of software upgrades for its latest flagship phone. The rumor was that the company only planned to offer one Android upgrade for the Sony Xperia 1 III.
That phone starts at a jaw-dropping $1,300, which made this rumor quite upsetting. While Sony isn’t one of the best companies around when it comes to software support, it’s usually been better than that.
Thankfully, Sony confirmed with Android Authority that this rumor is not true. However, the company’s language doesn’t fill us with confidence that it will be working its hardest to appease its customers.
Here’s the statement in full:
It is not correct that Xperia 1 III will have only one Android OS update. Sony aims to support Xperia 1 III with the latest Android updates for two years after its launch and we expect to have Android OS updates more than once during that period.
The use of the phrase “aims to” seems pretty soft to us. One would think Sony would have used more definitive language there, such as “is committed” or “promises.” Regardless, it looks like Sony Xperia 1 III owners can look forward to more than one software upgrade, presumably meaning Android 12 and Android 13.
