Ookla's Speedtest begins rolling out new mobile VPN in Android app
There are already a ton of great VPNs out there, some of which are even free. And now, whether you asked for it or not, there is another new kid on the block, and this time it’s Speedtest by Ookla.

Even though Speedtest is new to the VPN game, the app has been around for ages. It’s been one of the most popular network speed testing apps for as long as I can remember.
Right now the service is in beta, and it will be completely free during this time. Once the beta period is finished, Speedtest VPN should come with both a free and a paid tier, though pricing hasn’t been disclosed at this time.
The free option will support up to 2GB of data per month, while we presume the paid tier will offer unlimited connectivity. Unfortunately, any data used during the standard network testing will also count toward Speedtest VPN’s 2GB limit. It is also a mobile-exclusive service, and we don’t think Ookla has any plans of making a desktop client.
Speedtest provides a step-by-step guide on how to get started with its new VPN, but this didn’t work for us. In order to try out the functionality for ourselves, we had to download the latest 4.4.29 update from APK Mirror since the app in the Play Store hadn’t seen an update in weeks. If you are dying to try this out now, you can just as easily go the route we did. If not, you can simply wait for the Play Store OTA update to land on your device.
