Nervous about buying a TCL 10 Pro? The company made an update schedule promise.
TCL wants to make sure that anyone who buys its midrange TCL 10 Pro and TCL 10L devices know that they will receive plenty of updates for their phones. The company says that they will receive at least one major OS update (which would be Android 11), and security updates for two years.
A spokesperson representing TCL, in a statement to Android Authority, said, “We can confirm both the TCL 10 Pro and TCL 10L will, at minimum, receive one major OS update as well as SMR updates every two months for 2 years.”
The key phrase in the statement is “at minimum.” That means it’s possible owners of the TCL 10 Pro and TCL 10L could receive an Android 12 update as well, though it’s probably best for users not to get their hopes too high for that one. The device shipped with Android 10, so the first update would be Android 11, and if there’s another update, that’s where Android 12 could come into play. Of course, we’ll need to wait quite some time to find out if that happens.
As far as the SMR updates, those are Security Maintenance Releases, which are the standard monthly security patches released every other month as bundles.
With any midrange flagship phone, there’s always the question of whether it will receive enough OS updates to make the purchase worthwhile, and it sounds like TCL is committed to getting updates for at least Android 11 to buyers, which is what we’d expect to see from a midrange device manufacturer.
