The third member of the Moto G4 family is the lowly Moto G4 Play
Earlier today, Lenovo announced the new Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, two devices that continue Motorola’s tradition of offering decent specs and features at an attractive price.
At its New Delhi event, Lenovo mostly talked about the Moto G4 Plus, with its quality camera and front facing fingerprint scanner. The lesser-specced Moto G4 was more of an afterthought, and, as it turns out, there’s another Moto G4 device that Lenovo didn’t even bother to properly introduce – the Moto G4 Play.
As the Play suffix suggests, the G4 Play is the most budget-oriented device out of the trio. While the G4 Plus and G4 feature 5.5-inch Full HD displays, the Moto G4 Play harks back to the origins of the series with a 5-inch 720p display.
The Snapdragon 617 processor from the larger siblings is replaced by a quad-core Snapdragon 410, a SoC that was announced all the way back in December 2013. 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space complete the portrait of a phone that seems unprepared for the rigors of the modern app ecosystem.
Underpowered as it may be, the Moto G4 Play runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and a very “pure” version at that.
The G4 Play cameras are a notch below the Moto G4’s: 8MP on the rear, 5MP on the front, and just the most basic of features. At least the battery is quite good, at 2800 mAh.
Available in a dreary black or white, the Moto G4 Play will arrive sometime this summer, but Lenovo has not revealed the most important detail, its price. Given that the Moto G4 and G4 Plus are already quite affordable, we expect the Moto G4 Play to tread into bargain bin territory.
