Nougat update for unlocked Moto Z due in February, Moto Z Play in March
Owners of Motorola’s unlocked version of the Moto Z have been waiting very patiently to get the Android Nougat update that has been promised for some time. The Verizon versions of the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid were able to download those updates in mid-November, so it’s understandable why unlocked owners would be a little impatient. Now there’s some concrete news on a time frame for when the unlocked Moto Z will get the same update love, along with both the unlocked and Verizon Droid versions of the budget-priced Moto Z Play.
According to a Motorola spokesperson, Android Nougat will begin rolling out to the unlocked Moto Z sometime in February. The unlocked and Verizon versions of the Moto Z Play will take a bit longer, though. The spokesperson stated that those phones will receive the Nougat roll out sometime in March.
While it may seem strange that the carrier-exclusive version of the Moto Z got Nougat before the unlocked version, there is a simple explanation. Since the Verizon Moto Z Droid was actually released first in July, two months before the unlocked variant, the software updates for the carrier model got a jump in its development before work began on the unlocked version.
Hopefully unlocked Moto Z owners won’t have to wait too much longer to get the most recent version of Android on their phone. Do you think Motorola could have done a better job with Nougat updates on its Moto Z family? Let us know in the comments!
