Before you buy another USB-C charger, make sure it has this critical (and hidden) spec

Buying a USB-C charger is still harder than it should be.

Buying the perfect USB-C charger may look simple at first, but the reality is full of potential gotchas. If you’ve ever reached for your cable only to find that your device is still charging hours later, you’re certainly not alone.

In one sense, USB-C and USB Power Delivery were supposed to solve this mess. The universal connector and new regulations, such as those introduced in the EU, were designed to ensure that one charger could support everything. In some ways, that has been a success: USB-C can now be found on almost every phone, tablet, laptop, and more. However, the difference between something that technically works and something that works optimally can still be surprisingly wide.

Even before you get into the weeds of choosing the best charger, prospective buyers have some fairly laborious homework to do. Between choosing the right power level, ensuring protocol compatibility, and understanding how power is split across multiple ports, there are plenty of hidden pitfalls that set the best chargers apart from the rest.

Keeping an eye on these details matters. Picking a charger that doesn’t support the same charging standards as your smartphone is one of the easiest ways to end up with sluggish charge times. Fortunately, most recent smartphones support USB Power Delivery and its PPS (Programmable Power Supply) extension, which enables more efficient and flexible power delivery. Samsung’s Galaxy S and Google’s Pixel lines are just two of the biggest names on a list that also includes Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and many others. Apple, on the other hand, adopted USB PD AVS to fast charge its latest iPhones.

Problem solved then? Unfortunately not. Even if your phone supports USB PD PPS at 45W, for example, there are several different voltage and current combinations it could use to reach that power level — and your charger needs to support the right one.

9V, 12V, 21V? It makes a difference

Samsung is a very good (or perhaps a bad) example of this phenomenon in action. When it first introduced 45W charging for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the phone used a roughly 9V, 5A charging profile. That’s what Samsung’s official chargers and some third-party options supported, provided you also had a suitably rated 5A cable to pair with them.

With more recent Galaxy S Ultra models, Samsung changed the requirements to roughly 12V, 3A. However, not all chargers support this newer profile. Some older plugs that only provide the previous 9V charging method can still work, but they may be limited to around 27W, even if the plug’s total wattage claims to be far higher.

Wattage isn’t everything. Voltage matters too.

While moving to higher voltages is beneficial for efficiency and for reducing heat caused by high currents, it also creates a backward-compatibility problem. That hardly makes a convincing case for USB-C’s electronic waste credentials. The Galaxy S26 Ultra takes this even further, using a 21V, 3A profile to reach around 65W, meaning you’ll need a charger with yet another voltage capability to unlock the handset’s maximum charging speed.

Google’s Pixel series is similarly convoluted. Older models supported 27W charging using a common 9V, 3A profile. However, if you want to reach 37W on the Pixel 9 Pro XL or Pixel 10 Pro XL, you’ll need a charger capable of delivering 21V, albeit at a much lower 1.25A current.

The point is that even choosing a charger with the right protocol and wattage is no longer enough. The specific voltage and current capabilities matter just as much.

How to pick the best USB charger

Even with all this information taking up valuable space in our brains, finding the perfect charger remains far from straightforward. While a select few manufacturers happily disclose the exact specifications of their charging ports, others either don’t provide the information or simply list popular compatible products instead.

That’s understandable — detailed charging specifications are hardly consumer-friendly — but it makes choosing the right charger unnecessarily difficult for anyone trying to do their due diligence.

My advice is not to rely solely on lists of supported devices. While those recommendations might work today, they don’t guarantee that your next gadget will charge as quickly as you’d like. Instead, do a little extra research and look for a charger that supports USB PD PPS with broad voltage coverage.

21V USB PD PPS ensures fast charging on most modern phones.

For example, a 100W charger with USB PD PPS support extending up to 21V will cover virtually everything short of the most demanding laptops. It gives you a much better chance of keeping the same charger useful as your device collection grows.

The trick, however, is telling PPS support apart from regular USB PD. PPS is a flexible voltage protocol, so compatible chargers usually list it as a range rather than a fixed level. An example charger might advertise something like 3.3-21V at 5A for PPS, while standard USB PD profiles are typically listed as fixed outputs such as 9V/5A, 15V/5A, or 20V/3A.

Not every brand provides this information clearly, but you can often find it in product photographs, detailed specification tables, or even images shared alongside consumer reviews. See the picture above as an example. These sources can be a useful supplement when manufacturers leave out the details.

The irony is that USB-C charging has never been more capable, yet choosing the right charger has rarely been more complicated. The good news is that you don’t need to memorize every charging profile to make a smart purchase.

Look beyond the wattage printed on the box, check for USB PD PPS support, and pay attention to the voltage ranges listed in the specifications. A charger with broad compatibility is far more likely to remain useful for years, turning it into a long-term investment rather than another piece of electronic clutter.

  • USB PD + PPS support — essential for fast charging on most modern Android phones.
  • Check voltage ranges — don’t rely on wattage alone; broad PPS support (ideally up to 21V) offers better compatibility.
  • Match the power level — 30W is fine for many phones, but higher levels are commonly supported. Tablets and laptops may need 65W+.
  • Check multi-port limits — total wattage is often shared between ports.
  • Use the right cable — high-speed charging may require a 5A-rated cable.

The short version: choose a USB PD PPS charger with broad voltage support and enough wattage headroom for future devices.
