Verizon suffers another outage, this time after fiber cables were cut by vandals

Verizon customers in parts of Southern California are dealing with another service disruption, but this time the carrier knows exactly what caused it.

According to Verizon’s update on X, vandals have cut multiple fiber cables across Southern California, knocking out mobile and internet services.

The carrier says repairs are already underway and expects service to be restored within the next couple of hours.

The company hasn’t revealed exactly where the cables were cut or how many customers have been affected. However, law enforcement has also been brought in to investigate.

The outage follows a separate widespread Verizon disruption that affected its voice services on August 9. Verizon said engineers resolved that issue and advised customers who were still experiencing problems to restart their devices. The latest incident appears to be unrelated and is instead the result of physical damage to Verizon’s network.

Verizon is taking the incident particularly seriously because fiber cuts can affect more than just consumers and businesses.

“Acts of network theft and vandalism represent a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities,” the company said.

For now, Verizon says its crews are working to repair the damaged cables and restore service as quickly as possible.
