Wear OS 3 support expands, another watch gets the update
- The SKAGEN Falster Gen 6 is getting Wear OS 3.
- The update will require a factory reset.
- It will be getting a stock version of Wear OS 3 with no exclusive features.
Another smartwatch appears to be joining the Wear OS 3 party. The latest watch to get the update is Fossil’s SKAGEN Falster Gen 6.
According to Android Central, some Reddit users are reporting that they were able to update their SKAGEN Falster Gen 6 watches to Wear OS 3 today. The outlet later confirmed the reports by managing to update a few of its own SKAGEN Falster Gen 6 units.
Based on the report, SKAGEN owners appear to be getting a stock version of Wear OS 3. This would be similar to what the Pixel Watch has, but with none of the Pixel-exclusive frills. Additionally, it seems the update is stripping away Google Assistant, which makes sense given it’s not supported by Wear OS 3 devices with Snapdragon chips. However, Fossil says it’s working with Google to bring it back.
The update is optional, so before you begin installing, beware that updating requires you to factory reset the watch — something that will cause you to lose all of your data. The notification will warn you of this as well as it provides instructions on how to update.
Something else you’ll need to do is download the new SKAGEN Smartwatches app. As Android Central points out, this app is almost identical to the Fossil Smartwatches app and will allow you to set up and pair your devices.
If you don’t want to wait for the notification, you can just go to the settings and head for the system updates section (Settings > System > About > System updates). It should bring up the update, but if it doesn’t, you keep checking.
Fossil first started updating its Gen 6 watches to Wear OS 3 shortly after the launch of the Fossil Gen 6 Wellness Edition. It was expected that Fossil Gen 6, the Michael Kors Gen 6, and the SKAGEN Falster Gen 6 would all get the Wear OS 3 treatment. But it looks like it took a little longer for the update to come to the SKAGEN than it did for the rest of the lineup.
