WhatsApp could make unlimited Google Drive backups a thing of the past
- New code strings point to WhatsApp losing unlimited Google Drive storage.
- This comes months after it emerged that WhatsApp could let you manage the size of your backup.
WhatsApp supports the ability to backup your data to the cloud on both Android and iOS. But while iCloud offers a limited amount of storage on Apple devices, Google Drive offers unlimited storage for WhatsApp backups.
Unfortunately, it looks like this Google arrangement could change in the near future. Frequent WhatsApp tipster WABetaInfo has come across strings of code that specifically reference Google Drive limits. Check out the image below for a better idea.
There’s no word on the exact storage limit Google Drive will impose on WhatsApp right now, but we hope it doesn’t count towards the 15GB limit on the free tier.
This news also comes a few months after WABetaInfo came across an upcoming feature that would let you manage your WhatsApp backup size on Android. This feature would let you exclude certain file types from being backed up, such as photos, documents, and videos. So it certainly seems like the IM app will give you some options to manage the storage limit.
Either way, it’s not really a surprise to see WhatsApp ditching unlimited Google Drive storage. We previously saw the search giant abandon unlimited Google Photos backups last year, so we’re guessing this latest move could also be part of Google’s push for paid storage plans.
