Xiaomi’s smartwatch for children only costs $50
Smartwatches are a natural fit for the modern kid. After all, GPS location makes it easy to pinpoint a lost child, and since the device is strapped to their wrist, concerns about them losing a pricey piece of tech are lessened. We’ve seen smartwatches for kids before, but never at this price. The Xiaomi M Bunny goes for 299 yuan, which is just less than fifty bucks.
So what all do you get for the Ulysses S. Grant that you’ll fork over to receive this cutesy wearable? Well, the M Bunny allows parents to set up a virtual fence, and if the child wearing it wanders outside of that perimeter, the smartwatch will send a notification to the parents’ phones. The device can send and receive voice calls, and it even has a panic “SOS” button that immediately sends out the child’s GPS location along with seven seconds of audio in case there is an emergency.
This smartwatch has a soft strap made of silicone and uses an LED dot matrix to render a variety of Tamagotchi-esque emoticons and a time display. It has many capabilities that you would expect from a regular watch, including waterproofing and basic alarm clock capabilities. The 300mAh battery and low resource demand mean that the M Bunny can survive 6 days on a single charge if used minimally.
We don’t have any word regarding a US release of this device yet, but this nation of helicopter parenting may prove to be an ample market for products like the Xiaomi M Bunny. Considering Xiaomi has a US storefront where it sells various accessories, the idea of it coming stateside isn’t too crazy. Let us know what you think of this affordable, kid-friendly smartwatch in the comments below.
