A teaser render of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3.
TL;DR
  • Xiaomi has posted a sample photo taken with the Mi Mix 3’s night photography mode.
  • Despite the low-light setting, the photo has good color and plenty of detail.
  • Low light photography has become a key battleground for smartphone cameras.

Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun has unveiled a new camera sample that shows off the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3’s night mode (via Playfuldroid). The photo is of Beijing National Stadium and it contains some bright, diverse colors and plenty of detail — despite the low light environment.

While perhaps a less challenging situation than the photos Xiaomi released last week, highlighting the phone’s indoor low-light performance, the most recent snap is nonetheless more impressive. Especially noteworthy is the color reproduction in the reflection and the details in the stadium.

Of course, we don’t know the exact situation the picture was taken in. Xiaomi could’ve used an elaborate lighting setup, a tripod and Photoshop to produce this final image. Because of this, it’s hard to read too much into the camera’s overall performance from this snap, especially in light of the previous samples. However, it’s likely a good sign of things to come.

Alongside the race to see which OEM can add the highest number of cameras to its setup, low-light photography has been an important battleground for smartphone cameras recently.

In addition to Xiaomi’s efforts, Google’s Night Sight feature promises big improvements in low light photography, while devices like the HUAWEI P20 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 already have pretty impressive low light photography modes.

The Mi Mix 3 is set to launch tomorrow. While we don’t know a ton about its camera setup, Xiaomi has revealed that the phone — or at least of a version of the phone — will come with 10GB RAM and 5G support.
