Here's what YouTube's virtual reality app will look like
360-degree videos have been available in YouTube for about a year now, but that’s just the beginning of what’s possible when it comes to immersive video. With the announcement of Google’s new Daydream VR platform, YouTube is now giving us a good look at what its virtual reality app will look like. The VR YouTube app comes with all the same features in the standard smartphone app, like voice search, discovery, playlists and more.
And if you’re worried about the fact that there’s not a ton of 360-degree content in YouTube quite yet, don’t be — YouTube says everything from classic 16×9 videos to 360-degree footage will be available in the app.
Additionally, YouTube has announced it’s working with content creators like the NBA, BuzzFeed and Tastemade to experiment with new formats that offer a “wide range of virtual experiences.” It’s also working with a number of camera partners to make Jump-ready cameras available to creators. This is all in an effort to make the production of VR content more accessible.
No details on a launch date were given in the blog post, but YouTube says the new VR app will be available sometime later this year.
