Last year saw the first phone launching with an under-display selfie camera, as ZTE became the first company to offer this tech commercially. The biggest issue with this first-generation release was that image quality was far below traditional selfie cameras.

More phones with this tech are on the horizon, and we’re not quite sure what to expect in terms of image quality from these devices. What quality would you accept to buy a phone with an under-display selfie camera, though? That’s what we asked readers last week, and here are the results.

What would it take for you to buy an under-display selfie camera phone?

Results

Most voters don’t necessarily want new under-display cameras to blow traditional selfie shooters out of the water. Around 57% of readers would purchase such a phone if its selfie camera quality matched current selfie cameras on phones. Only 13.8% of readers are holding out for a major quality breakthrough.

Notably, for 18% of readers, quality doesn’t matter. They’d buy a phone with an under-display camera regardless. Finally, just under 11% of voters say they’d accept image quality that’s “slightly worse” than current selfie shooters.

Your comments

  • Albin: The only selfie cam innovation that ever interested me was the pop-out that stayed buried unless/until wanted, immune to snoops and not occluding the screen. RIP.
  • Skifarterking: This is a tech nobody is asking for, and it’s just an excuse to raise prices.
  • Evie: Price. As long as it can be used for face unlock and isn’t noticeable, I’m in. I can’t remember the last time I used my selfie camera.
  • Wongwatt: I’d buy one to get an uninterrupted display on a water-resistant device, I don’t take selfies, but I do video chat, so it would need to be reasonably good. Honestly, though, putting the bezels back solves all these problems without inventing anything.
  • jdrch: On par works for me.
  • TheOracle: My daily driver is the original vivo Nex S, and I bought it specifically because of the full screen. Almost 3 years later, the pop-up camera is still flawless even though I hardly ever use the darn thing. As soon as a decent under-display camera phone is available at a reasonable price and the right specs, I’m buying it.

That’s it for this poll. Thanks for your votes and comments. If you have any thoughts on the results of this poll or under-display camera technology, be sure to drop a comment down below.
